Science

St. Petersburg is a major center of scientific research and education in Russia (accounting for more than 10% of the total scientific and educational potential of the country).

More than 350 organizations are implementing researches and developments in St. Petersburg. Include more than 60 institutions of the Russian Academy of Sciences and other state academies, more than 250 state institutions conduct researches and developments, and 12 state research centers.
Research centers and science institutions and schools of higher education include more than 170 thousands of specialists, of which more than 9 thousand people are Doctors of Sciences and more than 26 thousands are Candidates of Sciences.
Brief description of the scientific potential of St. Petersburg
St. Petersburg is a major center of academic, applied and university science which has capacity to generate essential achievements in science and technology in the most diverse areas: hydrogen power engineering, microsystems, nano- and biotechnologies, new materials and other critical areas of research.
The scientific potential of the city has the following distinctive characteristics:
• availability of unique scientific schools, high-skilled researchers, engineers, technicians and production workers capable to maintain development of researches and technologies and to participate in implementation of prestigious international projects;
• capacity to combine perspective directions of fundamental and target-oriented researches and developments focused on specific results;
• capacity to support highly dynamical production process manifesting in continuous renewal of the component production (items under research, development, and in production;
• technologies, circuitry and structural design, information flows, etc.).
The city of innovation organizations use virtually all available forms of funding of the innovation processes: federal and regional programs, foreign grants, venture financing, and funds of industrial enterprises.
About 82 thousand researchers work in the city: of those - 2,9 thousand are Doctors of Sciences, and 8.9 are Candidates of Sciences, and 15.1 thousand are aspirants and doctorates.

Major directions of research, scientific, technological and innovation activities, pilot projects, testing and training of personnel in priority areas were established by the Russian Federation Government Verdict ¹449 as of 23.07.2005 «On Assignment of the Technology Park Status of the Russian Federation to the City of Petershof» for the Petershof Science and Technology Park (Naukograd) of the Russian Federation in correspondence with the priority directions of the science, technology and techniques development of the Russian Federation.
Information on development of Peterhof Science Town of the RF
The following events were held in 2006-2009 within the framework of implementation of the regulation of the Government of the Russian Federation of 23.07.2005 N 449 «On Granting Peterhof the Status of a Science Town of the Russian Federation»:
Development of social infrastructure of Peterhof Science Town of the Russian Federation:
The year of 2006 witnessed creation of the town «School of Restorers» and development of the design estimate documentation for construction of a multifunctional sports complex. In 2009 works were carried out involving running repair of the buildings and exterior improvement of a number of pre-school educational institutions and SEI of extended education «Peterhof» Children and Youth Center».
Development of engineering infrastructure of Peterhof Science Town of the Russian Federation:

In 2009 the town purchased manufactured and mounted video surveillance equipment, deployed a mobile local district center of the video surveillance system and performed a test demonstration of the possibilities of the system.
In 2009 capital repairs of Botanicheskaya street were carried out at the section from Chicherenskaya street to Shakhmatova street.
Development of innovative infrastructure of Peterhof Science Town of the Russian Federation:
The events performed involved computerization of Peterhof Science Town of the Russian Federation and educational institutions of Peterhof municipal entity, including design and laying of a fiber-optic cable of the telecommunication network of the Science Town of the Russian Federation with link-up of educational institutions, purchase of active equipment for link-up of educational and administrative institutions, creation of a technology transfer center and a telecommunication portal of Peterhof Science Town.
Work is under way to develop design estimate documentation for construction of a single innovative technological center of Peterhof Science Town of the Russian Federation including an administrative exhibition building.
In accordance with the decision of Saint Petersburg Governor V.I. Matvienko the development of the social and engineering infrastructure of Peterhof Science Town of the Russian


Federation in 2010 is financed from the budget of Saint Petersburg and development of the innovative infrastructure is funded by the federal budget.
